The Ark Textile Residency, January to July 2008

Clare has been working with all students from St Pancras Primary School in Lewes, East Sussex, to produce textile artwork for the new school building The Ark. This new art and science extension was short listed for the Observer Ethical Building Award in 2006. The architects BBM Sustainable Design Ltd have made use of sustainable local materials, such as coppice chestnut, cellulose insulation and wooden shingles.

In collaboration with students, Clare has designed and fabricated textile hangings for the interior of the building. This artwork also serves as sound insulation within the multi-leveled workspace. The cotton and woolen fabric used is from recycled and donated sources and dyed with natural ingredients.

The finished artwork is made up of two panels measuring; 4m x 2.4m and 4m x 1.4m.
