Decorative Fabric Dying Printing + Painting Fabric Construction Embroidery
Inspired by Japanese dying techniques, students used cardboard stencils and dye washes over the surface of the fabric. Diluted food colouring and turmeric spice provided the colour.
Taking reference from the ‘dabbing’ technique used to build up colour and design in Aboriginal art, students used the end of corks and sticks to apply paint to fabric.
The dyed fabric was cut into strips and squares for plaiting and fabric mosaics.
Indian Rangoli designs were traced and stitched into the dyed cloth with embroidery threads. Image shows back of swatch.
